Jeff Schultz, D
2010/09/01: Jeff Schultz is ready for the 2010-11 campaign after recovering from a bout of mononucleosis this off-season. "You hear about mono but you don't realize how much energy it takes out of you, how bad you feel and how you're pretty much stuck to your bed the whole time," he said. "I hate to say it, but of all times, it was probably a good time to have it. Earlier it would have been during the playoffs and later it'd be during camp. I've had enough time to work out and do stuff that it feels like I'm back where I should be." Schultz recorded 23 points and a league-best plus-50 rating last season for the Capitals. Alexander Ovechkin, LW
2010/08/28: The Washington Capitals admit that the Southeast division has become much stronger this off-season. "Every team in the division has gotten better," Coach Bruce Boudreau said. "The 24 games we play within the division are not going to be easy for us. For the most part, we're a very similar team to what we were, so they will know what they're facing whereas, with some of these teams that have changed more than the others, we're facing the unknown." Eric Belanger, C
2010/08/13: Eric Belanger has reportedly agreed to a one-year, $1.85 million contract in principle with the Capitals. However, the official announcement of the deal is being held up because Washington is trying to make other roster changes. The Globe and Mail is saying that the Caps are trying to acquire a defenseman and that Tomas Fleischmann may be going the other way in a trade, but according to Toronto GM Brian Burke it is not Tomas Kaberle. Stay tuned. (Source: Capitals Insider) |

D.J. King, LW
2010/07/31: Washington GM George McPhee had some harsh words for Stefan Della-Rovere. McPhee said he acquired winger D.J. King because he did not have use for Della-Rovere. "We have no use for tough players who can't play or hurt you defensively.what we see in this player is someone who brings grit but looks like he could be a reliable player. If we could add a player to the club who is gritty and can play, that makes us a better team. We think if we get working with this player, he can become a reliable player who can play a little bit more." McPhee clearly saw no use for an antagonizer like Della-Rovere on his squad. D.J. King, LW
2010/07/28: The St. Louis Blues have traded D.J. King to the Washington Capitals for Stefan Della Rovere. King had no points and 33 penalty minutes in 12 games with the Blues last season. He doesn't have any offensive upside, but he could 100-150 minutes in the sin bin if he plays regularly with the Capitals. (Source: TSN.ca) |

Tomas Fleischmann, LW/C
2010/07/27: Tomas Fleischmann has signed a one-year/$2.6 million contract extension with the Washington Capitals. The deal was made just one day before Fleischmann's arbitration date. Fleischmann scored a career-high 23 goals and 51 points in 69 games last season. He should put up similar numbers in 2010-11 if he consistently plays on one of the Capitals' two top lines. Tom Poti, D
2010/07/23: Tom Poti is feeling much better as he continues to recover from the face and eye injuries he sustained in Game 6 of Washington's first round series against the Montreal Canadiens. Poti sustained multiple facial fractures and temporarily lost the vision in his right eye after being struck by the puck. The injuries forced him to miss Game 7 of the series, which turned out to be Washington's last contest of the 2009-10 campaign. However, Poti says that he no longer has any problems with his vision. Poti still experiences some numbness in his face and he needs to stay clear of hard-to-chew foods, but he's been working out for eight weeks and has been on the ice. He even participated in a charity hockey game last week. It looks like Poti will be ready for training camp. (Source: Washington Post) |

Andrew Gordon, RW
2010/07/16: Andrew Gordon has accepted the Washington Capitals qualifying offer. The deal is for one year. Gordon has played three games for Washington in the last two years with nary a point. He had 37 goals and 71 points for Hershey of the AHL, so he does know where the net is. Still, he is likely to spend most of the season in the minors. (Source: Washington Post) |

Jay Beagle, C/RW
2010/07/16: The Washington Capitals have re-signed center Jay Beagle to a two-year contract. Beagle accepted the Capitals qualifying offer. He had a goal and an assist in seven NHL games last season. He will likely be up and down from the minors in 2010-11, mostly down. (Source: Washington Post) |

Chris Bourque, LW/RW
2010/07/16: Chris Bourque has rejected the qualifying offer of the Washington Capitals and will play in the KHL next season. Bourque, the son of Hall of Fame defenseman Ray, has not played well enough to crack an NHL lineup so he will try his luck in Russia next season. By giving him a qualifying offer, the Capitals will retain his NHL rights. (Source: Washington Post) |

Brian Willsie, W/C
2010/07/14: The Washington Capitals have signed Brian Willsie to a one-year contract. Willsie spent last season in the Colorado chain, playing four games with the Avs and the remainder of the season with the Lake Erie Monsters. He led the Monsters with 26 goals last season. Willsie had the best season of his NHL career with the Capitals in the 2003-04 season with 19 goals and 22 assists. The only way he approaches those numbers next season will be with Hershey of the AHL. (Source: TSN.ca) |

Marcus Johansson, C
2010/07/14: Washington coach Bruce Boudreau has been impressed with the skill of center Marcus Johansson. It was thought that the Capitals would address their need at center at the 2010 Entry Draft but they are very happy with Johansson who was the Caps first round pick, 24th overall, in the 2009 Draft. "It's my first look at him, and he carries himself like he's going to be a very good player," Boudreau said. "He's got the Nicklas Backstrom stride, almost. He's a better skater than him but he's big in the back so you can see where he can control the puck and will be hard to knock off the puck." That's a nice comparison for the rookie who will have the option of returning to Sweden this season if he fails to make the Capitals. (Source: Washington Post) |

Tomas Fleischmann, LW/C
2010/07/12: Tomas Fleischmann has been given an arbitration date of July 28. Hopefully the Capitals and Fleischmann will agree to a contract extension before the date. Fleischmann made $725,000 last season and scored 23 goals to go with 28 assists in only 69 games. He will get a very nice raise. (Source: Washington Post) |

Eric Fehr, RW
2010/07/08: The Washington Capitals have re-signed Eric Fehr to a two-year/$4.4 million contract. Fehr had 21 goals and 39 points in 69 games last season and should do better than that next season as a 50 point season is not unrealistic. Fehr, who had surgery on both shoulders during the off-season last year, is now healthy. "This is the healthiest offseason I've had in my pro career and I'm enjoying it," Fehr said. "I'm getting a good opportunity to get a little bit stronger and work on a few things I haven't been able to work on in the past. So I'm expecting some big things next year."
