Kirk Muller, LW/C
2012/02/04: With Thursday's 3-0 victory over the Bruins, the Carolina Hurricanes have completed their four-game regular season series sweep over the defending Stanley Cup championships. That's quite an accomplishment, especially given that Carolina is just 15-25-9 against the rest of the league. "It feels good to beat 'em four times," Eric Staal said. "But I, and I'm sure everybody in our room would say the same, would rather be first in the conference and lose to the last-place team four times." Carolina is 11 points out of first place and is one of the few safe bets to be a seller as we approach the trade deadline. (Source: Raleigh News ) |

Joe Pavelski, RW/C, San Jose Sharks
2012/02/04: The San Jose power play has been clicking since Joe Pavelski was put on the point. Pavelski was placed on the point with Dan Boyle, while Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture are up front. They have scored five times in their last 13 opportunities and are finally showing their offensive capabilities as they lead the NHL in power play shots on goal with 317 on only 167 chances, five shots more than the second place Flyers who have had 53 more power play opportunities. Paul Gaustad, C, Buffalo Sabres
2012/02/04: Paul Gaustad is expected to serve as a left winger on Saturday. Gaustad has spent the bulk of his time with the Sabres as a center, but Sabres coach Lindy Ruff thinks that he'll be able to make better use of his size as a winger. Gaustad has 13 points and 63 penalty minutes in 45 games this season. (Source: Buffalo News) |

Thomas Greiss, G, San Jose Sharks
2012/02/04: Thomas Greiss has held off Antero Niittymaki and has established himself as the backup goalie of the San Jose Sharks. Greiss re-signed in the off-season with the Sharks but certainly wasn't guaranteed a job with the big club. It was thought that Greiss would lose his job when Niittymaki returned after a 12 week absence from hip surgery but Greiss continued to play well and the Sharks placed Niittymaki on waivers. "I think Thomas seized the opportunity when he chose to come back and sign here. He believed in what Doug and the management staff had told him when they sat down [and said] `listen, you have an opportunity here and we want you back.' That's not an easy thing for him to do after he had been reassigned to Europe," coach Todd McLellan said. "I think he was confident and he believed in what he was doing and we believed in him, and he came in and did it. It wasn't necessarily the three months of playing - and that helped - but I think the day he signed he was bound and determined that it was going to be his." He makes a nice handcuff if you have Antti Niemi. (Source: csn.bayarea.com) |

Adam McQuaid, D, Boston Bruins
2012/02/04: Adam McQuaid is playing through a lower body injury. McQuaid skipped Wednesday's practice due to the ailment, but he still participated in Thursday's game. "It's taking a little time to heal," he said. "It's just difficult when you're playing so frequently and you don't have too much time." Boston is scheduled to play on Saturday and Sunday, but they'll follow it up with a stretch of just two games over the course of eight days. (Source: Boston Globe) |

Nathan Horton, RW, Boston Bruins
2012/02/04: Nathan Horton (concussion) might have rode a stationary bike Friday night, according to Bruins coach Claude Julien. Horton is starting to show signs of improvement, but it sounds like his return isn't imminent. Horton has missed three straight contests due to a concussion and is expected to be held out of a fourth on Saturday. (Source: Boston Globe) |

Jason Arnott, C, St. Louis Blues
2012/02/04: Jason Arnott suffered a shoulder injury in the third period Friday and did not return. Arnott was hit by the Kings Dustin Brown and slid into the boards, injuring his shoulder. Coach Ken Hitchcock does not think the injury is serious. "He's going to be on the trip and we'll see how he feels in the morning, but it's not significant right now," Hitchcock said. Stay tuned. Mike Smith, G, Phoenix Coyotes
2012/02/04: Look for Mike Smith to get the start in goal for the Coyotes on Saturday. Smith was pulled just past the halfway mark of the second period on Tuesday and has not had a chance to redeem himself as the Coyotes have not played since then. "I like to stay sharp." Smith said as he had only one practice after the five day All-Star break. "One day off's nice, but when you get into two, three and five, I think it's harder for a goalie to get back into it than it is for a player." Look for Smith to bounce back tonight as the Coyotes face the San Jose Sharks. (Source: Arizona Republic/Phoenix Gazette) |

Matt Halischuk, LW/RW, Nashville Predators
2012/02/04: Matt Halischuk has five points in four games since being teamed with Craig Smith on the same line. Smith has four points in that stretch as both players are clicking with each other. "We're taking the puck to the net, and it's going in right now," Smith said. "I think (Halischuk) is a really smart player. You don't see him have an off game a lot. We're working hard and getting rewarded for it." Halischuk has only 12 goals and 19 points in 52 games this season so unless he continues to stay hot, we cannot recommend him at this time. Erik Christensen, C/LW, Minnesota Wild
2012/02/04: Erik Christensen is thrilled to be with the Minnesota Wild after his trade from the Rangers on Friday. Christensen will provide the Wild with some much needed offense and the team gets a proven shootout goal scorer, something lacking on the squad as they are near the bottom during shootouts. "It's incredibly difficult; you kind of feel like you're dead weight," Christensen said as he was a healthy scratch numerous times for the Rangers. "I was almost ecstatic when they asked me to go down (to the AHL) for a conditioning stint. I thought, 'Great, I'll get a chance to play.' I was playing in a lot of systems, killing penalties, getting some experience. But playing in the NHL is where I wanted to be." He is projected to start on the third line with Darroll Powe and Carson McMillan, replacing Chad Rau. (Source: The Pioneer Press) |

Guillaume Latendresse, LW, Minnesota Wild
2012/02/04: Guillaume Latendresse (concussion) has stopped skating after doing so twice earlier in the week. It is not good news that the forward was shut down. He could be gone the rest of the season as his rehabbing now has to restart once he is symptom free again. (Source: The Pioneer Press) |

Pierre-Marc Bouchard, W/C, Minnesota Wild
2012/02/04: GM Chuck Fletcher is not expecting Guillaume Latendresse or Pierre-Marc Bouchard to return to action this season. Both players are out with concussions and while they could return, it's best for Fletcher just to move on for the remainder of the season. "I'm operating under the assumption that it'll be a bonus if Bouchard and Latendresse play for us," Fletcher said. "I have to manage from a worst-case-scenario perspective. That's how we'll operate. It's tough to predict time in either case, and we have to move on and do the best we can." (Source: The Pioneer Press) |

Justin Williams, RW, Los Angeles Kings
2012/02/04: Justin Williams consecutive points streak ended at nine on Friday. It's not like the veteran winger didn't have his chances as St. Louis goaltender Jaroslav Halak robbed him from in close with five minutes left in the game to preserve the 1-0 win. Williams has clicked with linemates Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brwown since being reunited with them 10 games ago. He is worth owning in most pools at this time. (Source: Los Angeles Times) |

Tom Gilbert, D, Edmonton Oilers
2012/02/04: It looks like Tom Gilbert (ankle) will return to the Edmonton lineup on Monday when the Oilers are in Toronto. Gilbert was injured on January 2 and it was thought he would be out around a month so he is right on schedule. Barring an injury in Saturday's game, the Oilers will be completely healthy for Monday's game as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is due to return on Saturday. Gilbert will give the Oilers a veteran presence on the blueline something they really need. (Source: Edmonton Journal) |

Sam Gagner, C/W, Edmonton Oilers
2012/02/04: Sam Gagner is still basking in the glory of his eight point night on Thursday. Gagner was absolutely thrilled to receive a text message from Wayne Gretzky congratulating him on his unbelievable night and also received a call from Paul Coffey. He tied the Oilers mark with both of the former superstars, feat that has only been accomplished 14 other times including Darryl Sittler's 10 point night in Feb. 1976. Coach Tom Renney put Gagner together with Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall after the first period and needless to say, he will not break up the line tonight, even with the expected return of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
